Australian boxer Shannon Taylor is off life support and breathing on his own, however he remains in a critical condition. A spokeswoman for Wollongong Hospital told AAP that Taylor had been taken off his life support machine on Tuesday but he remains under close medical supervision in the intensive care unit.

She was unable to confirm media reports from Taylor's friends and family that he had been sitting up in bed and squeezing hands.

Some media outlets have reported Taylor was taken to hospital following a suspected drug overdose on Sunday night, but that has not been confirmed.

The current WBF middleweight world champion fought a battle with drug addiction early last decade.

One of the longest-serving professional fighters in Australia, Taylor started his career in the paid ranks in July 1992.
