HBO's inability to put up enough cash to make a January fight between Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley a reality, may spawn another welterweight showdown that is just as intriguing. Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, has been telling media members in Atlantic City that a clash between Mosley and unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto is a good possibility for early 2009 - if all efforts to make Margarito-Mosley are exhausted.
Berto’s promoter Lou DiBella spoke with BoxingScene.com and loves the idea of making that fight with Golden Boy. DiBella says Schaefer is not using Berto’s name in vain; the two sides have discussed the possibility of such a fight in the past.
“It’s not just media talk. Richard knows that I would make the fight. He knows Berto wants that fight. We love the idea of that fight. It‘s a great fight and a great opportunity for Berto. Every time me and Richard come together, we have no problems making a fight,” DiBella said.
But, one immediate obstacle comes up - WBC mandatory Luis Collazo.
“We just have to see what happens. We could fight Luis in January and then fight Mosley in the spring. We could also petition the WBC [to fight Mosley with Collazo meeting the winner.] Right now we are in the negotiations period [with Collazo], but we would have to reach a deal soon [for the fight to happen in January], DiBella said.
If a Mosley-Berto fight goes forward, there is talk that a rematch between Margarito and Miguel Cotto will happen sooner than later. Instead of both fighters taking interim-fights, Top Rank, who promote both, may match them as early as February.
