According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, a junior middleweight contest between former champions Shane Mosley (46-6, 39KOs) and Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6KOs) is close to a done deal for the date of September 18 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Mosley-Mora will be part of a pay-per-view event that ties in with Mexican Independence Day. Undefeated welterweight/junior middleweight prospect Saul Alvarez will be on the card, with Matthew Hatton being mentioned as a possible opponent. There is also a chance junior welterweight Victor Ortiz, a ticket seller in Los Angeles, will be added to the undercard.
"I'm working on the next big fight for September 18. I think I should be able to have some news there pretty soon. But it looks like it's going to be Sugar Shane Mosley against Sergio Mora from the Staples Center. It's not done yet, but it looks like that's what it's going to be," said Schaefer.
Both agreed to meet in the middle. Mora will move down from middleweight and Mosley will be moving up from welterweight. Both are former champions at 154-pounds. As previously noted, to finalize the Mosley deal, Mora will have to cancel his scheduled fight with Juan Carlos Candelo on July 23. Mosley and Golden Boy do not want to risk the possibility of Mora suffering an injury in the fight.
