BoxingScene.com caught up to heavyweight Seth Mitchell of Brandywine, MD., to discuss his May 13 clash at the Buffalo Bill's Star of The Desert Arena in Primm, Nevada.
The 28-year-old Mitchell (21-0, 15 knockouts) will pursue his seventh straight stoppage, his ninth knockout in his past 10 fights, and his 20th consecutive win against Nicaraguan Evans "The Sandman" Quinn of Miami at the 6,500-seat venue.
Promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Mitchell is coming off of a second-round knockout over Charles Davis in March, but will take on a more youthful rival in the 27-year-old Quinn (20-5-1, 18 KOs).
Quinn has scored first-round knockouts in each of his past two bouts, even as he has been knocked out twice.
Quinn was stopped in the first round of his third professional fight by Juan Luis Gonzalez in September of 2004, and most recently, by Siargei Liakhovich in May of 2010.
BoxingScene.com: So I understand that you're a father to your first son?
Seth Mitchell: Yes, we just added my son, Seth Austin Mitchell, you know, that's his name. He's five months old. You know, I'm definitely just blessed. I'm just working hard and looking forward to a bright future. Golden Boy and my managers, you know, they have a lot of things planned for me.
Of course, everything is contingent on me continuing to progress and continuing to do what I've been doing. But the future seems very bright.I'm just taking it all in and staying humble and staying grounded. I'm definitely very confident, but I'm not arrogant or cocky. That's just me. But when the time comes, I will definitely be ready.
BoxingScene.com: So what do you know about your next opponent, Evans Quinn?
Seth Mitchell: I just know that he's tall at 6-foot-3, and that he's a conventional fighter as a right-hander. He's going to probably come in at between 220 and 230. He's a mover and he tries to counter punch.
He's a young guy at 27 years old. You know, I've fought these types of people, but they've all previously had a little bit of age on them.
So I'm looking forward to the challenge. I know that he's going to try to use his legs, but I'll have to have a tight defense and cut the ring off. I'm looking forward to the challenge.
BoxingScene.com: At this point in your career, is this sort of a transitional fight in terms of taking you to another level?
Seth Mitchell: I consider this as a good match for me and a good test. Because, for one, he has a good record. At 20 wins, five losses and one draw, he has a decent record. He has a decent knockout percentage with 18 knockouts out of 20 fights. He's 27 years old, so, as I said, he has some youth to him. This is definitely a good fight for me.
At this point in my career, I'm just looking forward to solidifying myself as a contender with some good fights this year.
BoxingScene.com: Can you discuss your training and your management and promotional plans?
Seth Mitchell: I definitley want to look good. This is my first time being on Showtime, so, you know, the live television audience is going to be watching me. I definitely want to look good. I mean, you'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day, but with that being said, you want to go out there and stick to your game plan and pressure this guy.
I don't want to let him breath. As far as my career, and how that's going, I've able to just be the fighter and I've been able to just train. I thank my trainer and my whole management team and my promotional company.
I think that they've done a tremendous job of keeping my busy and picking the right opponents with the different styles at this point in my career. They're getting me ready for the big fights. Thus far, I think that they're doing a great job.
BoxingScene.com: Can you identify some of the members of your team?
Seth Mitchell: Yeah, I mean, the whole thing is that I've only been boxing for less than three and a half years as a professional, and less than four and a half years total with the amateur fights. I've been blessed to have signed with Golden Boy Promotions, and to have an amazing trainer in Andre Hunter, and to have my management with Sharif Salim and Al Haymon.
I've been signed with Al Haymon for probably about two months, and now he's my adviser and manager. That happened in the middle of February. My trainer, Andre Hunter, they've all been great for my career.
