Unbeaten heavyweight Seth Mitchell will fight Mike Mollo in San Jose’s HP Pavilion as the co-feature to the Aug. 27 showdown between Marcos Maidana and Robert Guerrero, per several sources including the fighter himself.
"They talked about Michael Grant, but it's definitely going to be Mike Mollo now," Mitchell told this writer earlier today via phone.
With only four years of boxing experience under his belt, Mitchell (22-0-1, 17 KOs) of Brandywine, Md., has reeled off 20 consecutive wins, with the last seven coming inside the distance and five within the first two rounds. The former Michigan State linebacker is coming off a first-round knockout of Evans Quinn in his Showtime debut.
Mollo (20-3-1, 12 KOs), of Oak Lawn, Ill., is coming off a majority draw with Gary Gomez last August. Five months before the Gomez fight, Mollo earned a unanimous decision win against Billy Zumbrun, which is the only victory in his last four outings.
Mitchell is trained by Andre Hunter. He is managed by Sharif Salim, and as of February, added well-connected advisor Al Haymon to his team.
Neither Mitchell’s promoter Golden Boy nor HBO Boxing has confirmed whether the bout will be televised in its entirety on the network before Guerrero-Maidana.
