Former two-division world champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (0-2-1 in Mixed Martial Arts) lost a three round split decision to Sergio "Checo" Ortiz (2-1) in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was Mayorga's third Mixed Martial Arts battle. Mayorga's first MMA clash was eventually ruled a no-contest after the Nicaraguan boxer landed an illegal blow on the opponent. On July 28th, Mayorga only lasted a 1:40 of the first round when he was choked out by Rene "Level" Martinez (5-0-1) in Managua, Nicaragua.

This time around Mayorga looked a little better with his strikes and groundwork but he was controlled on the ground for the most part and Ortiz used his legs when the two boxers would square off on their feet.

After the match, Ortiz stated the "fight was harder than I expected" and even offered to have a remacth in Managua.
