WBC junior middleweight champ Sergio Mora (21-0, 5KOs) says that he would not have a problem with fighting unbeaten prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (37-0, 29KOs) in the near future. After Mora upset Vernon Forrest for the title in June, there was minor talk of Mora facing Chavez Jr. by the end of the year. The following month in Mexico, Chavez Jr. barely got past fringe contender Matt Vanda.
If the fight were to happen, Mora would have to beat Forrest in their rematch, and Chavez Jr. would have to win his rematch with Vanda on the proposed date of November 1. And even then the fight would depend on how good Chavez Jr. looks against Vanda.
"I've had talks with the people from Julio's team, and they spoke to me about a fight with him. I would be delighted to fight him. I would even like the fight to take place in Mexico City," Mora told ESTO.
"I admired his father, Julio Cesar Chavez, several years ago I saw him fight right here in Las Vegas, in September, a special date for Mexicans, because the independence of the country is celebrated. I dreamed of one day arriving here, and at last, here I am. Now the son of a legend rises and the challenge is thrown at me."
Mora said there is a big obstacle before the fight could take place. The networks are not interested in the fight unless Chavez Jr. wins a big fight to set up the meeting.
"I see an obstacle for that fight. The people in the boxing, those with the networks, are asking for Julio to win a big fight, and then go after me. I believe that he's ready to face me, but the promoters and the networks are the ones that have the last word. I will not avoid Chavez Jr. They put together the agreement and we will fight," Mora said.
