The return of former two-division world champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martínez will return on August 22 in Torrelavega, Spain, as part of an evening led by one of his fighters, Sergio García, the current European champion of the super welterweight.
The evening, organized by Martinez's promotional company, will be held during the Virgen Grande de Torrelavega festivities and will be a historic event for the Cantabrian city, one of the capitals of European boxing in recent times.
"I don't mind not being the headliner, I need to do the return match right now, time is going against me," Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO) told his team in a statement.
Martinez, 46-years-old, will return to the ring after more than six years of inactivity.
The last time he was seen in ring was back in June 2014, in which he was stopped by Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York and lost the world middleweight belt.
With serious knee injuries, Martinez decided to end his career a few months later.
After recently declaring that in that last stage of his career he was "disgusted with boxing", Martinez will return with renewed energy and a new corner commanded by the young Madrid coach Tinín Rodríguez, with whom he has been training with for the last two years.
In addition, Martínez will return to a Spanish ring after thirteen years away from fighting in the country, with a confrontation agreed upon against a opponent that will be announced in the near future. The fight will be over ten rounds in the middleweight division, which is where he achieved his most remembered successes.
As part of the Torrelavega card, four bouts are already confirmed and, in addition to "Maravilla" Martínez and Sergio García, there will be the presence of former world champion Kiko Martínez and the young Basque boxer Jon Fernández.
