Sergio Martinez Ready To Fight Paul Williams on October 2

Last December, Martinez and Williams traded knockdowns in the first round, and then fought at a furious pace until the final bell. After the smoke cleared, Williams won the "fight-of-the-year" candidate with a close twelve round majority decision. One judge scored it a 114-114 draw, while the other two saw it for Williams with scores of 115-113 and an unrealistic 119-110.

Martinez has since bounced back from the Williams loss in a major way. He captured the WBC and WBO middleweight titles with an impressive unanimous decision win over Kelly Pavlik in April.

Sampson Lewkowicz, the agent for Martinez, told BoxingScene.com that his fighter is ready to accept the Williams rematch for October. But, Lewkowicz says the rematch is in limbo because Williams' promoter, Dan Goossen, is positioning his fighter for a run in the welterweight division, where Williams was a champion two years ago. Since his last appearance as a welterweight, Williams fought three times at middleweight and twice at junior middleweight.

Lewkowicz, currently in Guadalajara to watch Saturday's fight between Saul Alvarez and Luciano Cuello, believes the rematch is a logical fight for both boxers. A welterweight run for Williams is a waste of time, says Lewkowicz.

"I have a lot of respect for Paul Williams. He is a great champion. I believe he wants the rematch with Martinez, but his promoter is chasing a fantasy fight with Manny Pacquiao, which will never happen. Williams is too tall. Pacquiao wouldn't fight Yuri Foreman because he said Foreman was too tall, and Williams makes Foreman look small," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com.

"The same goes for Floyd Mayweather Jr. He doesn't have to fight someone like Paul Williams. He can fight anyone and make just as much money. The fight with Martinez was very close and could have went either way. I guarantee the rematch will be just as exciting and if not the fight of the year, the rematch will be the first runner-up for fight of the year at worst."

Williams has ring rust, hasn't had a real fight since Sergio. Can only see Sergio putting a real *** whooping on big Paul this time im afraid. Sergio by stoppage TKO in the 9th round,.

It's not exactly a secret. Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports, is pushing to make a rematch between Paul "The Punisher" Williams and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. It looks like Martinez is putting Paul on the spot and the ball is in Paul's court. It also seems like HBO is gonna kick both of these guys to the curb if they don't fight each other. Williams better not go down to 147, because outside of the prospects, Pacquiao, and Mayweather, there's nothing but bums in that division now. He'll lose me as a fan if he does that.
