A few days ago, former two division world champion Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) announced that he planned to continue his career. At 39-years-old, some wondered if Martinez would ever fight again after suffering a one-sided stoppage defeat to Miguel Cotto in June.
During the fight with Cotto, it appeared that Martinez was troubled by his knees. Last April, Martinez seriously injured his right knee during his decision win over Martin Murray. After two surgeries and rehabbing for several months, Martinez was forced to be very careful in his camp as he prepared for Cotto. Martinez avoided any exercises that would place his right knee at risk to get reinjured.
Martinez has already had one specialist evaluate his knee and now he plans to get a second opinion from another doctor in New York. He wants to ensure that his leg is capable of underdoing a tough training camp for a planned return.
"I want to see how well my knee is. I'll do the necessary studies to see how I am. I hope to recover the leg work that led me to the top," Martinez said.
