BoxingScene.com has been advised that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) has been medically cleared to begin training in February.
Martinez has been recovering from multiple injuries that he suffered during his April unanimous decision victory over previously unbeaten British contender Martin Murray.
Martinez's adviser, Sampson Lewkowicz, confirmed to BoxingScene that his boxer's lead physician, in charge of overseeing the rehabilitation, has given him the green light to hit training camp in the month of February.
Given the news, Martinez will have plenty of time to get prepared for a potential fight with former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) - being targeted for June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden. But Cotto is reportedly only one of the options out there for Martinez, and no agreement has been reached between the two sides.
