WBC middleweight champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez may receive a new championship status from WBC president Jose Sulaiman. The WBC is going to issue a possible decision naming Martinez the WBC's "Champion Emeritus" at middleweight. The WBC has three champions at middleweight. If Martinez receives the new status from the WBC, then "silver champion" Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will likely face "interim-champion" Sebastian Zbik on March 26 for the regular title.
Chavez is return on January 29 in Mexico against Billy Lyell. Martinez is going to make a title defense on March 12 against the WBO champion at 154-pounds, Sergei Dzinziruk.
Sulaiman said - "we're considering Sergio" Maravilla" Martinez to be a WBC Champion Emeritus."
