According to sources in Mexico, WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (30-0, 20KOs) of Ukraine is pushing to become the first opponent of the new year for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (35-0, 26KOs). Senchenko and British boxer Matthew Hatton are the two names being considered for Alvarez in February or March. Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya had advised BoxingScene.com in an earlier report that both fighters are at the top of the list for Alvarez.

The younger brother of former world champion Ricky Hatton is the leading candidate to get the fight. Hatton has expressed interest in the fight, but Senchenko is hungry to get the opportunity. Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez told reporters in Mexico that it's a 50-50 shot for Senchenko to get the opportunity.
