Don't be surprised if British featherweight champion Lee Selby relinquishes his title later this week. The Welshman has already won the Lonsdale Belt outright, and is clearly moving onto a higher plane. He first won it in September 2011, and has since made four successful defences, most recently against Rendall Munroe in February. He's outgrown the belt.
This weekend, Selby hopes to continue his climb up the world rankings faces Mexico's Romulo Koasicha, with the WBC International title at stake. A win would put him in touching distance of a final eliminator.
If Selby does hand the belt back, it may not gather dust for too long. Next Wednesday (21st), Leeds prospect Josh Warrington defends his Commonwealth featherweight title against the seasoned Irishman Martin Lindsay.
The Belfast veteran is a former holder of the title, and was also one of Selby's victims in 2013, so his credentials are sound. Warrington is one of the rising stars of the division, winning his title over a faded Munroe last month. He is thought to have a promising future.
Adding the British title to the Commonwealth belt would make a lot of sense, and there would appear to be no realistic obstacles to prevent it happening. Expect two titles to be on the line when Warrington and Lindsay meet next week.
