The big unification clash between Mexic's Giovanni Segura and Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon began to receive recognition when the World Boxing Association (WBA) announced at its annual convention, which is taking place in Nicaragua, that it was chosen as "Fight of the Year 2010."
Segura (25-1 and 21 knockouts) was crowned the unified champion of the WBA and World Boxing Organization (WBO) at 108 pounds on the night of August 28, 2010, when he defeated by TKO, Calderon (34-1 -1 and six knockouts), in the eighth round at the coliseum Mario "Quijote" Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
"We are very happy with this award which the WBA gave to this big fight. Despite the result for iur fighter, it was liked by the public and the experts of boxing," said promoter Ivan Rivera, president of PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP). "We know that it will get other awards, as it was tremendous and very exciting fight."
Calderon used his elusive boxing in the early rounds to subdue an aggressive Segura, who used an effective body attack to come from behind to prevail in the eighth, but not before fighting with the resistance of Calderón, who stood his ground several times to fight against the strong Segura. At the time of ending, the judges had it 69-64, 68-65 and 67-66 for Segura.
PRBBP now working on the rematch between Calderon and Segura, which could come to life in the early months of 2011 and again would be in Puerto Rico.
"We are negotiating a rematch of this great fight and wants to bring it to the fans in the first quarter of 2011. We know it will be another great show a second time around between Calderon and Segura. So we will continue our negotiations," said Rivera.
Segura fights at flyweight (112 pounds) this Saturday, November 27 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, against compatriot Manuel "Chango" Vargas (28-6-1 and 13 knockouts).
