BoxingScene.com spoke to WBA/WBO/Ring light flyweight champion Giovani Segura about his upcoming rematch against Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico. Segura, who has had trouble making the 108 pound limit has said that this will be his final fight in the division and that he will look to win a world title in the 112 pound division next.
Segura has made some key changes to help him not only make weight but to also increase his stamina and energy level inside the ring. One of the most significant changes that he made is in the foods he eats. Segura told BoxingScene.com, "I've changed some of my eating habits. I used to eat a lot of unhealthy food but now I eat much healthier. I am eating more seafood, soups and vegetables."
While other fighters would hire a nutritionist or chef to prepare their foods, The Aztec Warrior has taken a novel approach to changing the way he eats. The Mexican fighter has his mother prepare all of his meals. "A lot of fighters hire nutrionists, chefs, or physicians but I keep it simple. I have my mom cook for me. She's been making all my meals for this camp and its paying off."
Eating healthier isn't the only change that Segura has made. He says that he learned a valuable lesson from his struggles in making weight for the first fight with Calderon. In an effort to avoid those struggles, the heavy handed puncher has increased the length of his training camp which in turn has led to more weight loss and also increased staimina. "'I've had an extended camp this time around compared to the first fight. This camp has forced me to train harder and to do my roadwork consistently which has resulted in easier weight loss."
Segura-Calderon 1 was the fight of the year for many publications including BoxingScene.com. The fight featured great back and forth action and the final result was that the bigger Segura was simply too strong for Calderon. Segura walked through Calderon's punches and overpowered him. Segura concentrated on going to do the body early on and his efforts paid off as he was able to take Calderon's legs away forcing the light hitting Puerto Rican to stand and trade. Segura dropped Calderon with a bodyshot in the middle of the 8th round that ended the fight. Calderon rose to one knee but didn't make it to his feet before the ref reached a 10 count. Segura plans on ending the rematch in similar fashion and predicts that it will bethe final fight for the former 2 division champion. "I have been so focused for this fight. My conditioning is even better and there will be only one result come April 2nd and that is the ending of Calderon's career," Segura told BoxingScene.com
