Scott Fitzgerald set up a potential showdown with Anthony Fowler by scoring a knockout –– but it wasn’t all plain sailing.
The Preston super-welterweight, a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, finished Craig Morris in the final of 10 scheduled rounds.
‘Fitzy’ had been expected to dispatch of the Shropshire man in quick fashion at the Arena Birmingham, exclusively live on Sky Sports.
But it was far from easy work for the undefeated man who had to take as good as he got for the majority of the contest and may well have been one round down heading into the last session.
The 26-year-old managed to catch Morris in the last stanza and force the referee to step in after 45 seconds of the round.
Afterwards, Fowler credited Fitzgerald for the win, but told Sky Sports: "I think I am the better fighter of of the two of us and I think it was shown in that fight.”
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald said that he will be switched on when the time comes.
He said: "I'll stay at it and remain professional. I can't make any mistakes.
"I won't be slipping up and of course, when they want it, I will be ready."
And Lewis Ritson warmed up for his fight next month with a third-round stoppage win.
Ritson, who got rid of Nicaragua’s Oscar Amador with a crunching body shot, will challenge for the vacant European lightweight title against Francesco Patera on October 13 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.
