MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Ringstar Sports CEO Richard Schaefer is expecting a very big future for WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs).
On Saturday night, Garcia pulled off a major statement with a crushing three round knockout of previously undefeated of Dejan Zlaticanin to capture the WBC crown. A two-punch combination sent Zlaticanin down and completely out. Zlaticanin was unconscious for at least a minute before the ringside physicians were able to partially get him up and sit him down on a stool.
Last July, Garcia snapped a 2½ year layoff. The now three division world champion sat on the bench while waging a legal battle with his former promoter, Top Rank.
Schaefer, who plans to work with Garcia for years to come, was blown away by the performance. He strongly believes that Garcia will eventually become a pay-per-view sensation.
Over 10,000 fans were in attendance at the MGM Grand. And despite the fact that a great number of them flew in from Ireland to watch Carl Frampton in the main event - there were loud chants of "Mikey, Mikey" during Garcia's fight.
"It's unbelievable. As I said before, the sky is the limit. I am really convinced that Mikey has all the upside and all of the potential to carries the pay-per-view business going forward. We were all sort of waiting, to see who would be the guy to follow in the footsteps of all of the pay-per-view stars like Floyd Mayweather and we didn't really know who it would be. And we see all of these bullsh*t pay-per-views going on now. This is the guy, you guys all know it. The charisma, the skills, personality," Schaefer said.
"He's the king of the hill and there are a lot of options. It's not anymore about 'who's going to want to fight Mikey.' Everybody is going to want to fight Mikey, because that's where the money is."
