Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is trying to finalize a fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and British superstar Amir Khan. Mayweather is scheduled to return on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
While Khan is viewed by many a huge undercard in the fight, Schaefer believes Khan has the skills, and the speed, to give Mayweather a lot of trouble and potentially pull off one of the biggest upsets in the last few years.
Mayweather is currently on a tour of South Africa and won't announce his opponent for seven to ten days.
"We are working on that. I'm working very diligently. Floyd Mayweather works on his own time clock. I'm waiting to hear back from him, but it is a fight that I would love to do, because I do believe that Amir Khan has the skills to shock the world. I don't think that it would be such a big shock to us, because I have always said that I do believe that Amir Khan, although he had a couple of setbacks, is still one of the best fighters in the world and has the potential to become the best pound for pound fighter in the world - and that of course leads to Mayweather. I'm going to do whatever I can to get this fight done, and I believe Floyd will make his choice in the next seven to ten days," Schaefer told Sky Sports Ringside.
