As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Ringstar Sports CEO Richard Schaefer is backing Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) to defeat WBA/WBC/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) next September.
Schaefer, when he held the position of CEO at Golden Boy Promotions, promoted several of Canelo's biggest fights - including the bouts against Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Austin Trout and several others.
He left Golden Boy in June of 2014, a little over a month before Canelo's scheduled fight with Erislandy Lara.
When BoxingScene spoke to Schaefer on Thursday, he not only backed the Mexican superstar to win but he also said - if he was still in charge of Canelo's career - the fight with Golovkin would have happened by now.
Schaefer admits that he attempted to persuade Canelo to keep away from tough fights with Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr. - but Canelo demanded to face both of them.
Most critics have Canelo as a wide underdog against Golovkin, but Schaefer believes the critics are simply underrating Canelo and overrating Golovkin. Schaefer completely believes that Canelo is ready to fight Golovkin right now and places the blame, for the fight being delayed until next fall, on the fighter's handlers. Schaefer says the fight should happen, without question, in May.
"You guys are underestimating Canelo and I think you guys are overestimating Golovkin. He can get hit. He's not like superman. He's Triple G. He's not superman," Schaefer said.
"When [Canelo] wanted to fight Mayweather or when he wanted to fight Austin Trout, I told him it was too early, you don't have to fight these kind of guys. But you know what, he was insisting [to fight them], he wanted it. He's the ultimate fighter, he wants to test himself and he realizes how good Golovkin is. He wants to do it for the fans."
