Eric Gomez further elaborated to BoxingScene.com on recent news that Golden Boy and Top Rank commenced talks to stage a winter fight between Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KOs) and WBC No. 1 junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (30-0, 19 KOs).
“There’s a couple dates on the table,” the Golden Boy matchmaker said today via phone from Mexico. “There’s a December date and a November date, so we’ll see what Top Rank comes back with, and we’ll go from there.”
"I'm waiting for [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum to get back to me with the numbers that he needs for Martirosyan so that we can hopefully put that fight together,” Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV’s Lem Satterfield. “Martirosyan has always wanted to do the fight. He's even said that he would have no problem going to Mexico, which is a sentiment that Bob had shared with me as well."
Despite having been inactive for 13 months before leaving promoter Gary Shaw for Golden Boy, Angulo’s first-round destruction of Joseph Gomez two weeks ago sparked a substantial amount of interest from television networks and the boxing world in general. Gomez briefly explained the public’s fascination with “El Perro.”
“He’s an exciting fighter,” explained Gomez. “He’s a head-first fighter with a great punch. He throws a thousand punches a round, and that’s why boxing fans—especially the Mexican fans—love him. He’s just an all-action fighter.”
