WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders would not rule out the possibility of an April unification with IBO/WBA/IBF champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin. Saunders captured the title on December 19th with a majority decision over Andy Lee in Manchester. He raised his record to 23-0, 12KOs.
BoxingScene.com reported on Wednesday that Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions sent a lucrative offer to Frank Warren, promoter for Saunders, to stage a unification potentially at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) unified his three belts by snatching away the IBF belt from David Lemieux in October by knockout.
Reacting to the presented offer, Saunders said via social media - "People asking me about. [Regarding a fight with] GGG it's down to my management. If I get the green light lets GO! I am is a fighting man I wouldn't back down a fight from any man."
Saunders management is likely not going to approve of such a contest in this short of a time span. Warren had previously stated that his fighter was at least 18 months away from a showdown with Golovkin. He was far more interested in matching Saunders against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez or Miguel Cotto.
Since Saunders was the mandatory challenger to Lee, it provides the British fighter with the opportunity to make one or two voluntary defenses before the WBO sets down a mandatory challenger.
Another rumored opponent for Golovkin's April return include Tureano Johnson, who won an IBF world title eliminator on the Golovkin-Lemieux undercard.
