Welterweight prospect Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is having a hard time getting an opponent for his September 18 return at Staples Center in Los Angeles. According to Golden Boy Vice President Eric Gomez, the opponent Alvarez wantes, Matthew Hatton, turned the fight down. Alvarez returns on a pay-per-view featuring Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora in the main event.
Two possible opponents being mentioned are former champion Carlos ‘Tata’ Baldomir and Delvin Rodríguez, who fights Ashley Theophane on ESPN.
"It's difficult to find an opponent for "Canelo," but we've spoken to a few people and we're on our way to confirming someone," Gomez told Sal Rodriguez.
The issue with Baldomir (45-12-6, 14 KOs) could become the weight, although Alvarez is the WBC silver champion at junior middleweight. Alvarez often fights around 150-pounds and Baldomir may not be able to get that low. Rodríguez (25-4-2, 14KOs) has to win his fight with Theophane to remain a possibility.
