The new super welterweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (36-0), arrived to hero's welcome at Mexico's Miguel Hidalgo airport. The 20-year-old star of Guadalajara, won the vacant title last Saturday in Anaheim, California with a twelve round decision over Matthew Hatton. Alvarez will stage his next fight in Mexico against a ranked opponent in the top five. He wants to make his first defense in early June.
"I can assure you that my first title defense will be in Guadalajara, however, we don't know yet who it's going to be, but most likely it's going to be someone ranked in the top five by the WBC," Alvarez said. "This is the first step of many great things, and hopefully the defense will take place in the first week of June in Guadalajara, and it will be a dream for me. Now with this title have a greater responsibility, but we are prepared to face the best, like Mosley, Cotto or Pacquiao."
