At Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, 19-year-old rising prospect Saul Alvarez (30-0-1, 22KOs) won the toughest fight of his career by pulling off a twelve round decision over veteran Lanardo Tyner (21-3, 13KOs) to capture the NABF welterweight title.
It was a very entertaining fight. Tyner gave as good as he got and at times he managed to land some very good punches on Alvarez. Alvarez had swelling around both of his eyes by the eight round but he never stopped coming with his quick, hard punching combinations. He scored often when he was able to back Tyner against the ropes to unload his power shots.
Tyner did press the action often and kept coming, even at the end, but was easily backed off when Alvarez threw his power shots. Alvarez showed off some decent boxing skills by controlling the ring with movement at times and sticking his punches in when he saw the right openings. He also showed good stamina by going twelve full rounds, including the ability to continue throwing hard punches in a very active twelfth round.
