Canelo Promotions have sent word to BoxingScene.com that WBC junior middleweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0, 29KOs) will return on May 5th. The undefeated Alvarez has already began to exercise in his native Guadalajara. Canelo's team made no mention of a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who returns on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Alvarez is one of the two fighters being considered to face Mayweather on May 5, but recent reports are stating that Robert Guerrero is now the frontrunner to get this match.
If Guerrero secures Mayweather, sources in Mexico believe that Canelo will appear on the Mayweather pay-per-view in a co-feature position - either from the MGM Grand or a different location. Canelo's addition, either against or alongside Mayweather, will create additional revenue for the big Mexican "Cinco De Mayo" pay-per-view.
Last September, Mayweather and Canelo co-headlined an HBO pay-per-view from separate locations, with Mayweather knocking out Victor Ortiz in Los Angeles, while Canelo stopped Alfonso Gomez in California.
