23-year-old welterweight prospect Konstanin Ponomarev has already amassed a 29-0 record. That is quite impressive for a fighter of that age.
With that being said, the Ural Promotions and Top Rank co-promoted fighter may have to wait a little while longer for a shot at a world title if his trainer Abel Sanchez gets his way.
"I have only had him for about eight, nine months. It takes time to do the things that we have to do in our gym. I hope that we are 4 or 5 fights away from a title shot honestly," Sanchez explained to BoxingScene.com. "
"Unfortunately with a record like that sometimes you get pushed into a shot that you are not ready for. But I hope that his management and with my encouragement, I get the three or four fights that I need so that we are completely ready for that title shot."
Sanchez wants his fighter to get exposure but also wants to make sure his fighter is in the best possible position to not only fight for a title but win it.
"TV is fine. I just don't want him to get pushed too fast into that title shot and he doesn't do as well as he could do," said Sanchez.
