The trainer of Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO's), Abel Sanchez, is preparing his fighter for a middleweight unification bout in two weeks against David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KO's) from Madison Square Garden in New York. Sanchez says Golovkin is preparing for the toughest fight of his career just two weeks out.
“We have one more week of training, one more week of sparring, we’d weighed 165 for the 30 day weigh in,” Sanchez told BoxingScene.com. “So we’re going to be ready come two weeks. And if we do what we what we need to do it should be ok. But it’s an explosive fight a fight for the fans and as a fan I would tune in.”
Sanchez doesn’t expect either Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez, who collide on November 21, to watch the fight between Golovkin and Lemiuex. The winners of both bouts were ordered by the WBC to face each other.
“I don’t think they’re going to watch,” Sanchez said of Cotto or Canelo. “I think they have a tough fight and their going to concentrate on what they’re doing and not concentrate on us. If the roles were reserved I don’t think we’d be watching either.”
For Sanchez, he feels it’s only a matter of time that the excuse of Golovkin not being a draw will not be a valid sticking point when it comes to Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez.
"You would think that but that was the excuse that he wasn’t a draw but if we do sell well [on pay-per-view], what would be the excuse then? I hope that their (numbers are) good. If it does well on pay-per-view then the question would be on them. He sold out the StubHub, sold out The Forum. He sold out in New York. It’s not about ticket sales and ratings anymore. He’s a threat to them. Fighting GGG brings you a lot of money. David Lemiuex took this fight because he’s making a lot of money. We’ll do what’s been mandated by the WBC. We won’t take another step aside,” Sanchez said/
