The normally reserved Samuel Peter, who has been in Cancun for a week, wasted little time in disparaging just-arrived WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev at a press conference today at the Royal Hotel promoting the first world heavyweight championship in Mexico at Plaza de Toros (HBO 9:30 ET/6:30 p.m. PT).
Maskaev and Peter had been scheduled to meet on Oct. 6 at Madison Square Garden, but Maskaev pulled out on Sept. 21 due to a back injury. That postponement did not sit well with Peter, whom the WBC made its interim heavyweight champion on Sept. 24.
When Peter was asked to speak, he stepped to the podium and glared at Maskaev.
"I'm coming to fight on Saturday night and I promise I'm going to beat you," Peter said. "I'm going to punish you and beat you up. I've been fighting for seven years and I've never ducked anyone. I hope you're planning on coming to fight on Saturday. You can run no more."
