Sam Eggington could be in line for a step up in level in the new year.
The former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion, who stopped Midlands rival Frankie Gavin inside eight rounds in October, exclusively live on Sky Sports, looks set to fight for the European title.
Eggington, 23, has a ring record of 19-3 with 11 early and was recently installed as the mandatory challenger to Ceferino Rodriguez and the blue belt.
The European Boxing Union has revealed that the parties are in private negotiations, while Boxing Scene understands that the fight will take place on a date to be confirmed in February at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham.
Rodriguez, who is co-promoted by former two-weight world champion Sergio Martinez, claimed the vacant strap in early December in his homeland of Gran Canaria, Spain, defeating Frenchman Ahmed El Mousaoui on points.
Eggington, the current WBC International champion at the weight, tweeted on Tuesday that the new year “is going to bring big fights and [a] big title.”
Further details will be revealed in due course.
