Thailand fighter Sakai JockyGym, 20, died of a brain haemorrhage on Monday night after suffering a TKO loss in the tenth round of super bantamweight bout with Niki Kazuyoshi. Sakai was knocked down in the first and tenth round of the fight in Fukuoka, Japan. He left the ring in a daze and later fainted in a dressing room. He was unconscious when an ambulance took him to a local hospital. Doctors tried CPR after his heart stopped. They were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead.
Sommart Hongsakul, Sakai's trainer, told Japanese papers that his fighter was fit and trained very well for the fight and passed a physical examination with ease.
The Japanese boxing promotion team pledged Bt500,000 for Sakai's family and all expenses in sending his body back to Thailand. Sakai's exact ring record is unknown. He is listed as being 2-3, 2KOs on Boxrec, but that could be an incomplete record or it could have been a huge mismatch. Sakai was knocked out in two of his last three coming into the fight on Monday. Kazuyoshi record is 25-3, 13KOs. It should be noted that Kazuyoshi knocked out a fighter making his "pro debut" in his last fight.
