Former heavyweight champion John Ruiz is tired of David Haye talking about his big win over seven-foot Nikolai Valuev. Ruiz challenges Haye for his WBA heavyweight title on April 3 in Manchester. Ruiz said Haye barely threw any punches against Valuev and mostly ran for twelve rounds. He thinks Haye got the decision because of the fans who were in the crowd that were cheering him on with every punch.
“It was a clever tactic because he won - but it would have been a terrible tactic if he’d lost. David did most of the movement and a lot of running. He barely threw punches. The fact he got the decision was more based on the fans he brought to the arena. Every time he did punch they roared and went crazy - that alone affects the judges. It counts more than when the opponent connects. But it was the perfect fight because he won, Ruiz told the South London Press.
Ruiz is not worried about a robbery in England. He fought over there in the past and never lost. He would be more worried if the fight was being held in Germany.
“I’m not worried about coming to England. I’m 6-0 in fights over there and I’ve always got a fair shake - whereas in Germany I’m 0-3. The fans in England are proper fans. They don’t care where you are from - they are just there to see a good fight and the most important thing is that you put on a good show. They will applaud for the home guy and his opponent," Ruiz said.
