What has happened to Rudy Lopez, of Quintana Roo, Mexico?

He explains:

"I have had certain health problems that put me away from boxing for almost one and a half year. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with cancer and that made me retire temporarily, but thank God, I am back".

Characteristic of Rudy, being a humble and kind man: He is looking to go back to the rings with "new spirit":  "I want to be again in the first levels of world boxing, and I am self confident of doing so, but in order to do it, I definitely need the support of my promoter, who has always supported me just like when I was a world champion.

For several months he devoted to driving a taxi in his hometown, Cancun, while he was medically discharged.

After having won the Featherweight world title, on July 30th, 2006, by defeating Takashi Koshimoto, of Japan, in Fukuoka, he was foretold a promising future as a world champion, the first one born in Quintana Roo, but unfortunately for him, in his first defense, five months later, he lost the title to In-Jin Chi, of Korea.

And since then, Rudy has had a difficult life; however he has won three bouts after his comeback, reason for which he asking to be scheduled more frequently, as his fights are so infrequent that it takes him up to five months to get back in the ring again, and that "Is detrimental to me, as I do not have an adequate pace to return to the first levels of boxing, and I aspire to win another title, because I have always thanked the attention given to me by the World Boxing Council, and its President, Jose Sulaiman, and now more than ever, I want to go back to having important bouts as I have a two-year old daughter and I do not want to stay at the point of "he was a world champion, but there is no financial support".

Rudy will be another one of the stars who will be attending the 48th WBC Annual Convention, to be held precisely in Cancun, from November 1st to November 6th, 2010.
