New York- A lot has to go into beating undefeated Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO’s), who never allowed any of his opponents to reach the twelve round distance.
On March 18th, it will be Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO’s) who takes his turn to take on the challenge. The two will meet inside New York's Madison Square Garden on HBO pay-per-view.
Jacobs’ trainer, Andre Rozier, has faced Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez in the past. Rozier worked the corner for his nephew, Curtis Stevens, who was stopped by Golovkin a few years ago. They key will be for Danny to be active and move effectively.
“Danny is a big numbers puncher and he lets his hands go and that’s how he needs to control the bout with throwing 100 punches a round,” Rozier told BoxingScene.com.
“With Curtis (Stevens), it was lesson learned, I was imploring him to let his hands go but he didn’t. With Danny he’s going to be punching but moving as well. You have to move your hands to score victories.”
Team Jacobs will head to San Francisco to train in Virgil Hunter’s gym shortly. As far as Hunter’s involvement in camp, it is still unknown. What is known is that Jacobs will be around world class boxers for camp.
“We’re going to be leaving soon to San Francisco,” stated the trainer. “Virgil offered his gym facility. I know Andre Ward and Virgil for 23 years. Andre Ward and Curtis Stevens fought when they were younger. He’s a big brother to me so just to be in the environment is going to help because Andre Berto, Amir Khan, and Andre Ward are going to be there.”
Much has been said about Jacobs and his ability to take a punch. Jacobs was stopped by Dmitry Pirog twelve fights ago and then dropped by Sergio Mora last year. Across the ring is quite possibly the biggest puncher in the 160 pound division. Rozier says Jacobs will be ready for the power.
“Danny has sparred with guys that were bigger guys than Golovkin, big punchers are not a secret or surprise, so he’ll be ready for that,” Rozier said.
