Andre Rozier, best known for training middleweight Daniel Jacobs, has a new fighter in lightweight contender, Richard Commey (25-2, 22 KO's), who he is co-training with Gary Stark Sr.
"Listen, this young man came in... he was very, very, very ready to turn the gears up. He's an affable young man, he's very courteous, very considerate, punctual and he works like nobody else. I'm very happy with him joining our family,''Rozier told BoxingScene.com in a recent interview.
Commey, hails from Accra, Ghana, which has produced a fine lineage of boxers such as Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartery. This region is noted for having fighters who are physically well-conditioned and strong. Commey has those same attributes.
But Rozier notes - "He's a little bit different, he's got a little more finesse than your average Ghanian, just a little bit more and and he wants to get a little more rounded with it because a lot of his fellow boxers from his country they're usually kind of stiff, kind of rigid and he wants to be a little more fluid, a little more graceful in in the ring.
"So we're working on that now and him being a little more loose with his footwork and definitely sharper with his counters."
Commey, who's two losses came against Robert Easter and Denis Shafikov in competitive bouts, is expected to fight again in the fall in a title eliminator.
As for Jacobs?
"He's in the gym already and he's working out loosely, keeping it nice and clean. It's summertime and he loves his abs, so he's keeping his abs tight, looking good," noted Rozier, chuckling at the thought.
"But we haven't had information pertaining to a date, as of yet So we haven't turned up the training full throttle but we will just as soon as we find out when he's going."
An October 14th date at the Barclay Center has been discussed for Jacobs return to the ring. Back on March 18th he lost a unanimous decision to Gennady Golovkin at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
