LONDON (AP) - Roy Jones Jr. said on Sunday he wants to fight IBF super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe.
Calzaghe's promoter, Frank Warren, is in negotiations with Jones' lawyer, Jim Thomas, to set up a possible fight at Cardiff's 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium in early July.
Having lost his last three fights after holding world titles at four different weights, Jones is eager to take on the Welshman.
"It would be a wonderful fight to make, something the fans deserve, and I don't think there would be any problem in getting Roy Jones to do it," Jones said.
"Roy Jones is up for anything. That's what I do for a living. I am a true bona fide warrior, and if the money is right then I'd be more than prepared to come over."
Jones was impressed by how the unbeaten Calzaghe scored a lopsided decision to take Jeff Lacy's IBF title a week ago. The Welshman, who is 41-0, also made his 18th defense of the less prestigious WBO title and is the longest reigning world champion after 8 1/2 years.
"Joe is a wonderful fighter. It was a terrific performance against Lacy. He has proved himself over and over again," Jones told BBC Radio Five. "It would be a tough fight to call. Joe is very busy, very durable, gets up for the big fights. But if I couldn't knock him out then I wouldn't be fighting him."
At light-heavyweight, Jones has lost twice to Antonio Tarver and was knocked out by Glenn Johnson.
Warren said he'd tried to set up the fight several years ago, but Jones - who was then rated pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world - had wanted too much money.
"If we can agree the terms then I will make the fight in a heartbeat," Warren said. "But Roy certainly needs Joe more than Joe needs him. I've been talking to Jim Thomas for a month now, and I'm due to see him in the States in the next week or so.
"If they accept my offer then we can make the fight. It depends what the American networks would pay because at the end of the day we need their money to add to that of ITV to make it work."
