Later tonight, former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (63-9, 46KOs), 47-years-old, will continue to fight again. This time he headlines a boxing/mixed martial arts card in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida.
He will face Rodney Moore (17-11-2) at the Pensacola Bay Center. Moore has lost his last nine fights and hasn't picked up a win since 2002 - fourteen years!
When Jones got knocked out cold in May of 2011 by Denis Lebedev in Russia, many felt the future hall of famer would finally retire as that was his third defeat in a row. Instead he returned to the ring about six months later.
After picking up eight victories against overmatched opponents, Jones stepped up his level of competition against another aging fighter, former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli, last December. Once again, also in Russia, Jones was brutally knocked out cold in four rounds.
Initially, Jones states that tonight's fight with Moore would probably be his last.
"It’s a great fight, probably my last one. I love Pensacola, I thank the fans for being so supportive throughout the years. This is my way of saying thanks as I’m on my way out. I love boxing, I love the sport but there comes a time when you have to start looking at your exit. I always wanted to exit the way that I wanted to exit," Jones said to On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"I always like to put on a show for the fans. I got the quickest hands in boxing still, so I’m going to be out there showing that and we’ll see what happens."
But then Jones reveals that it's "very possible" that he'll continue to fight, when asked if a good performance against Moore would motivate him to keep his ring career going.
"It’s very possible [I will fight again if I look good]. I can’t make a prediction now though," Jones said. "I love the sport. I love doing a lot things that I don’t feel like people are doing."
