It was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald that Roy Jones, Sr. may not be able to arrive in time to help prepare Anthony Mundine for his upcoming rematch with Sam Soliman on March 7 the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The vacant WBA super middleweight title will be on the line.
Jones Sr. trained Mundine in Florida back in 2004, and came to Australia to train him for Mikkel Kessler in 2005. Since the 2005 Kessler bout, Jones became an important part of Team Mundine, and was in the corner of Mundine for his 2006 bout with Danny Green, one of the biggest bouts in Australian boxing history.
"At the moment there are a few timing issues that we've got to get around to see if he [Jones Sr] can come out at that time," Mundine's manager Khoder Nasser said. "It's not looking too good in that sense. We're looking at bringing him out in the last two weeks, and at the moment it doesn't look like that fits into his itinerary. There is a chance he may not get here at all. We're all hoping it comes off. We see him as a very good stabilising, experienced member of our team, especially when we have big fights."
