A drop in weight for Roy Jones Jr? Topping last Saturday's pay-per-view in Pensacola, Florida, Jones dispatched of Omar Sheika in five rounds. During the post-fight festivities, Jones told reporters that he might consider a move to the super middleweight division for a potential fight with Jermain Taylor.
Taylor will have his hands full on April 25th when he challenges undefeated Carl Froch for his WBC title. A fight between Jones and Taylor was discussed in 2007 at the catch-weight of 170-pounds. Negotiations broke when Taylor decided to make a mandatory defense against Kelly Pavlik.
While Taylor continues to train for his title opportunity in April, Jones is probably going to take another fight to stay busy. Several names have been thrown around, including fellow Floridian Jeff Lacy. Now a promotional free agent after parting with Golden Boy Promotions, Lacy can deal directly with Jones and the fight can do some decent business in Florida. Lacy is taking a stay-busy fight on April 10 at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. Coincidently, Lacy returns after suffering a twelve round decision loss to Taylor.
Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella, is open to making a fight with Jones.
"First we have to worry about Froch. If he we get past Froch, we are more than happy to fight Jones. He may not be the Roy Jones of old, but he is still a tough fighter," DiBella said.
