Later tonight at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California, HBO will present “Night of the Rising Stars II,” featuring a triple-header showcasing two of the better up and coming prospects in the sport, and a main event with two junior middleweights ready to stage a war for the interim-WBC title.
Junior middleweight prospect Alfredo Angulo (13-0, 10 KOs), from Mexicali, Mexico, riding a nine-knockout streak, faces his toughest test to date in Andrey Tsurkan (26-3, 17 KOs), a tough Ukrainian veteran from the Bronx. Angulo is often compared to Antonio Margarito because of his come-forward, take two hits to land one, style. Tsurkan is a solid test to see just how far Angulo can go, and to see if his chin is the real deal. Tsurkan has knocked out five of his last six opponents, with only Yuri Foreman lasting to the end to win a close-split decision - the only loss for Tsurkan since 2004. This fight has already been tagged as the favorite to steal the show.
Featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (11-0, 9 KOs), a 2004 Olympic gold medal winner, is regarded as one of the top prospects in the sport. He puts his winning record on the line against Marcos Ramirez (25-0, 16 KOs) for the IBF Latino title. I haven't seen enough of Ramirez to make a good observation. The guy has decent power, he won a clear decision over 19-0 Adailton De Jesus in his last fight, and has the edge in experience. Gamboa, an obvious harder puncher, also fought De Jesus (after Ramirez), but at super featherweight - knocking him out in six-rounds. But during the fight, De Jesus dropped Gamboa, a concerning stat. It's not the first time Gamboa has been dropped in a fight. He doesn't appear to have the greatest chin, but he always gets up to win. Many hope that Gamboa's chin holds up better than Amir Khan, who picked up a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.
In the main event, many fans will get their first look at two junior middleweight darkhorse fighters. Sergio Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KOs) of Spain will face Alex Bunema (30-5-2, 16 KOs), a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but now living in Memphis, Tennessee. The WBC interim-title on the line. Martinez has one loss on his ledger, to Antonio Margarito back in 2000. Since the sole loss, he's built up a massive 27-fight win steak over the last eight-years. Bunema, mandatory to the WBA title, is having the best year of his career. In January he knocked out former champion Roman Karmazin and a few months later he stopped Walter Matthysse. Both of them have predicted knockout wins.
