Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBA welterweight title against former three division champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs). Margarito is coming off last July's dramatic eleven round stoppage of Miguel Cotto. No stranger to in-ring drama, Mosley was last seen in September when he knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in twelve rounds.
This could be the end of the road for Mosley. When interviewed last week by media members, Shane said he would "probably retire" from the ring if he performed poorly in the fight. Retirement is not on his mind. At age 37, he would like to continue his career for another three years and retire at 40. Against Margarito, he wants to duplicate the amazing performance of his Golden Boy partner, Bernard Hopkins, who dominated a much younger Kelly Pavlik last October.
"This is going to be a great event. We've worked on everything at camp and I feel great and sharp. This is going to be a great fight and I want to thank Margarito for taking the fight when he could've fought anyone. To fight right here in both of our back yards, where we both came up fighting the hard way...I've just been up here a little longer," Mosley said.
Margarito is on a mission to retire Mosley from the sport. He wants to be the person to clean out the welterweight division. The outcome has no bearing on his next mega-fight. Even if Mosley wins, Margarito will still have a rematch with Cotto in June. Margarito has been very vocal about his focus for the fight with Mosley. For the last few days he refused to answer any questions about a Cotto rematch. The only person on his mind is Mosley. He won't make the mistake of looking too far ahead.
"I'm really prepared for this fight. We did our work in training camp and we know Mosley is a very experienced fighter. There are no secrets here, we know our styles and I'm very certain I will raise my hands in victory on Saturday night," Margarito said.
