Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California - Lightweight contender Romero Duno (18-1, 14 KOs) dropped Ezequiel Aviles (16-3-3, 6 KOs) three times, on course to a solid eight round unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored it 78-71.
Aviles was coming off a ten round knockout loss to Oliver Quintana, which took place all the way back in May of 2017.
Duno has now won nine fights in a row since losing an eight round decision to Mikhail Alexeev in May of 2016.
The first round was close until the closing seconds, with Aviles landing a few good punches and fighting smart when Duno would jump inside. At the end, Duno jumped forward with a good shot and put Aviles down. Aviles initially struggled to get up, but made it to his feet.
They were trading good shots in the second, and both were landing. The same exchanges were taking place in the third and fourth. Avila was giving as good as he was getting, but Duno's punches were harder. Duno began to take over in the fifth with more punches connecting.
During the sixth, Duno landed a series of big shots to score the second knockdown of the fight when Aviles' gloves touched the mat. Aviles was hurt and took punishment until getting dropped for a third time in the closing seconds when a straight right hand connected.
Duno dominated the seventh. Aviles came out firing in the eight, looking to go for broke as they were exchanging. Duno had the upper hand, with Aviles showing a lot of heart. In the final five seconds, Aviles was hurt badly - with time running out before Duno could follow up.
Junior middleweight Travell Mazion (14-0, 12 KOs) blew out Alan Zavala (15-3, 13 KOs) in the first round. Mazion was much stronger from the early going, with hard combinations rocking Zavala.
During an exchange, a hard counter hook sent Zavala down and out for the full count.
Lightweight Oscar Duarte (15-0-1, 10 KOs) stopped Roger Gutierrez (19-3-1, 16 KOs) in four rounds.
After two rounds of competitive fighting, Duarte was really letting his hands go in the third and fourth with power punching combinations to the head and body. During the fourth, Gutierrez lost two points for what the referee felt was an intentional head clash.
At the end of the fourth, Gutierrez's corner had seen enough and would not allow the boxer to come out for the fifth round.
