The former junior lightweight champion of the WBO, Roman 'Rocky' Martinez, is training hard for what he believes to be a set comebac in late February or early March - likely against undefeated Yuriorkis Gamboa, the former featherweight king. If Gamboa falls through, he wants to fight Juan Carlos Burgos.
"Gamboa is the first option I have to fight and if he won't fight with me, then I want to face Juan Carlos Burgos, who took the unbeaten record of Luis Cruz. The fight with Gamboa is at a catch-weight to fight an eliminator and then Adrien Broner. We're talking about the end of February or March. Those are the plans so far," he said.
Martinez (25-1-1, 16 KOs) lost his title and unbeaten against Ricky Burns, who left the title and ascended to the lightweight division.
"There is no Christmas vacation. I know Gamboa is not easy but you have to do the work. It's great but we'll adjust. He's coming up and I'm going to take advantage. My goal in 2012 is to be champion again," he said.
