If the fighters are willing to do it, there could be a very attractive battle between hard-hitting Puerto Rican super featherweights Luis "El Artesano" Cruz (16-0, 13KOs) and Roman "Rocky" Martinez (24-1, 15KOs). Carlos Gonzalez reports that Miguel Cotto Promotions and PR Best Boxing Promotions are discussing the possible fight for December 11 in Bayamon.
The fight has already been hit with an issue. Cruz tells Gonzalez that he doesn't feel ready for an opponent like Martinez and needs a few more fights. He would rather face Martinez in mid-2011.
"A fight with Rocky is attractive to me, but I know it's a tough fight and you have to go through a process," Cruz said. "I'm not crazy. I need two to three tough fights and go through the same experiences that Rocky has had, prior to such a fight, but I'm definitely interested. "
Martinez, who is trying to get back in the title picture after his crushing defeat to Ricky Burns, says Cruz is running away from the contest. He says Cruz was talking a lot of trash and now he doesn't want to fight.
"It's time to prove if he's ready to fight in the big leagues. You must pass the tests in the same way that I did to become a champion," Martinez said. "Cruz was talking a lot and now he's pulling back. At one point he said he was willing to fight me, but perhaps he's afraid."
