Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) is calm and relaxed. There are still almost two months before his defends his WBC flyweight title against Brian Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs), an opponent who theoretically is the most complicated in the career of the Nicaraguan banger. The fight will take place on the Gennady Golovkin vs. David Lemieux undercard on October 17th at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Roman continues to prepare at the gym Roger Deshon in San Judas. There are no issues with his weight, as he's currently stepping on the scale at 124 pounds, according to coach Arnulfo Obando.
One of the aspects they have not yet defined is the selection of sparring partners when they travel to Big Bear, California. Roman with his team will travel there in the first week of September to complete the last phase of preparation.
Last week, it was reported that among the sparring candidates was Mexico's Edgar "Power" Jimenez, but yesterday at a press conference Gonzalez and Obando ruled out that possibility.
There are four names on the list of sparring partners, but of these the only one confirmed is Henry Maldonado, a 115-pound fighter and considered by Obando as a strong fighter and has an relentless attack.
The other three fighters who are on the list are: Carlos "Chocorroncito" Buitrago, Felix Alvarado and Elvis Guillen. Of these, the first two are the most likely to be in Big Bear, but that will be determined in the coming days.
"Carlos and Felix are very strong fighters with experience in world title fights," said Obando. "The problem we have right now are the visas. We are going through the procedures. If we manage to get them, the sparring partners will travel to the camp in September."
