WBC flyweight world champion Roman 'Chocolatito' González is in Japan to address various issues with his promoter Akihiko Honda of Teiken Boxing Promotions.
One of those issues is moving up in weight to challenge Mexico's Carlos Cuadras (35-0-1, 27KOs) for the WBC super flyweight world title on a date in September.
There is talk that Gonzalez vs. Cuadras fight could take place on the 17th or 24th of September, potentially held in Los Angeles or Las Vegas. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, if the fight came together there would be a request in place for Gonzalez to retain his WBC belt at 112 in the event of a loss or if he decides to drop back in weight.
Even as early as a few days ago, some of Gonzalez's team members told press members that a move in weight was imminent.
"Chocolatito will head up to 115 pounds. He doesn't think that he's continue at flyweight anymore," a team member stated.
Carlos Blandon, who manages Roman, has been careful to deny that they have started negotiating this fight - but Cuadras has constantly contradicted him. Cuadras has been clear in stating that negotiations are moving forward and plans to have his own meeting with Honda, who promotes both fighters, to discuss the monetary terms.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman gave his blessing to the fight and says there is "great potential" in the fight coming together.
In winning a fourth division title, Gonzalez would surpass the number of divisional belts captured by his countryman and idol Alexis Arguello.
Gonzalez is unbeaten in the ring with 45 wins (38 KOs).
"That's a dream for me, becoming a four-division world champion. I think I can do it with the help of God. Let us hope that fight can happen, "said Gonzalez said.
