The two-division WBA world champion (105 and 108 pounds), Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez (28-0, 23KOs), is back in the gym and training to get in the best physical condition possible for the next defense of his flyweight crown. Gonzalez fought on March 19 in Puebla, Mexico and punished former champion Manuel Vargas for twelve rounds.
Gonzalez, with power in both hands, wants to face WBO champion Giovani Segura, who knocked out Ivan Calderon in three rounds on Saturday in Mexicali. He doesn't want Segura to move up in weight without settling the issue on who is the best boxer at 108-pounds. Gonzalez wants to return in either June or July.
"I've been running, jumping rope, hitting the back and doing exercises that will help me get in the best good physical condition possible for my next fight. I want to prepare well to continue to deliver good performances. I know that my fights are going to be more demanding and I intend to win forcefully," Gonzalez said.
Trianer Arnulfo Obando is working to improve Gonzalez's defense.
"We will work more on defense. He took many unnecessary punches in his last fight. I think Roman's talent will allow him to test different style variations and stay afloat, but he can not make mistakes. Also I'll put more physical training in the gym and more road work to make him even better," said Obando.
