Roberto Ortiz Tops Fidel Monterossa In Abbreviated Bout

Roberto Ortiz won a technical majority decision over Fidel Monterossa in a bout that was halted after six rounds in the Fox Deportes main event, live from Tulum, Mexico.

Headbutts played a major factor in a bout that saw frequent visits from the ringside physician. Both fighters were guilty of excessive headbutting, accidental or otherwise. 

Time was called twice in the second round and for good midway through the sixth round, when it was determined that Monterossa - with cuts over both eyes and his left eye grotesquely swollen shot - was deemed unfit to continue. Monterossa also lost a point in round two. 

Ortiz was smart to target the wound, even if it wouldn't produce a true stoppage. The unbeaten welterweight continued to shoot right hands, further enhancing the swelling around Monterossa's left eye to the point where he could no longer see out of it. 

Scores were 56-56 even and 58-54 (twice) in favor Ortiz, who remains unbeaten as he improves to 28-0-1 (22KO). Monterossa is winless in three fights as he falls to 29-7 (23KO). 

Joseph Aguirre scored a unanimous decision over Israel Huerta in a four-round battle of local debutantes. Aguirre (1-0, 0KO) controlled the action and had no difficulty in overcoming a near 10 lb. weight disadvantage against Huerta (0-1, 0KO). No scores were announced, other than that the decision was unanimous.
