Former two division champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero was in the running to face WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan on July 23 in Las Vegas. A few days ago, Khan finalized an agreement to face IBF champion Zab Judah. Guerrero has a reserved comeback date of August 6th on HBO. One possible opponent being mentioned is WBA interim-junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana. BoxingScene.com spoke with Guerrero about his inability to secure Khan, and possibly facing Maidana in August.
BoxingScene.com: What are your thoughts on Amir Khan choosing to fight Zab Judah over you?
Robert Guerrero: I thought that Amir had said that he would rather fight me, but I guess that it just didn't go through. I guess that it's a potential fight for the future. I don't sit there and just dwell on it or anything like that. I'll just move on and keep on trucking and see what the next fight is that comes up.
BoxingScene.com: Are you getting any feedback from Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions or do you sense from any buzz from your fans who they might want to see you fight next?
RG: I've heard Marcos Rene Maidana. You know, if they can make the fight, then that would be great. He's a tough guy who is coming off of a great win with Eric Morales.
I did say that before that fight, that hopefully, I could get the winner out of Morales and Maidana. If they can make the fight it would be great. At this point, it's like, 'Bring whoever.' Just bring whoever, and that's who I will fight. I want to fight the best, and if they think that that's Maidana, you know, then let's do it.
