Elite trainer Robert Garcia believes that big underdog Robert Guerrero (33-3-1, 18KOs) has a chance of upsetting the unbeaten Danny Garcia (31-0, 18KOs) when they meet in the ring on January 23rd at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. The fight will be the inaugural Premier Boxing Champions card on Fox.
Guerrero is widely viewed as an underdog due to his tough outings in 2015. He was dropped and lost a wide points decision to WBA "regular" champion Keith Thurman in March and then struggled in a split decision win over Aron Martinez in June. Guerrero was down and in that fight as well.
BoxingScene.com caught up with the Southern California based trainer, who recently opened a gym in San Antonio, to get his take on the upcoming highly anticipated match up.
"I do give him a chance. Robert is a warrior. Robert has already been tested and I think he will give Garcia a really good fight. People go off of Robert's last fight against Aron (Martinez), a lot of people don't know - and Robert never really said what happened. One of his really close relatives passed away the week of the fight and he wasn't even able to attend the service so come on.
"Plus it is not like Martinez is a bum. Look what he did to Devon Alexander. I think for Robert it was just an off night and he had personal problems so I think it will really be a good fight," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
